Housing Exhibit in Elmhurst

The Elmhurst Historical Museum has unveiled a new exhibit called “Dwellings: A Study in Residential Architecture”.  The exhibit is a case study of the diverse architectural style of homes in the western suburbs.   Examples include homes from the 1800’s through the current Eco-Friendly Green homes.  The museum curator, Lance Tawzer, designed the exhibit to match the typical features of the various architectural styles with actual homes built in Elmhurst.  The self-guided tour includes a map that matches the physical location in Elmhurst with the homes shown in the exhibit photographs.  SWA Architects designed (more…)

Green Building in Elmhurst

The builders of two new houses nearing completion about three blocks from each other in Elmhurst have the same goal—to build a more environmentally friendly house—but they took very different routes. “I’m glad there’s so much flexibility [in green building],” says Bill Styczynski, the architect and builder behind a new house at 135 Oak Street, which was built for the family who lived in the former house on the lot. “It’s not one cookie-cutter approach.” (more…)

Inexpensive Home Facelifts

I have been contacted by several potential clients during the last six months who are interested in updating the exterior of their homes.  In most of these cases the homeowners are satisfied with the size, functionality and location of their homes but have become dissatisfied with or tired of the exterior style.

In 2008 we worked with Legacy Design and Construction to complete a facelift to a home in Naperville.  The owners of the home needed to replace the windows in their 25 year old home so they decided to take advantage of the federal government’s energy credit, reduce their federal income taxes and update the style of their home at the same time.  (more…)
